Launched in 1998, United Bamboo has established itself as a pioneer in fashion design and creative collaboration with downtown artists, curators and musicians under the direction of Miho Aoki and Thuy Pham.

Japanese-born Miho Aoki moved to New York to study fashion design at FIT. Vietnamese native Thuy Pham studied architecture at Cooper Hewitt. They met at the New York – based fashion / art collective Bernadette Corporation, where Thuy Pham was the designer. They later re-united to form United Bamboo.

Multidimensional in scope and focused on fostering the new and experimental, United Bamboo’s re-visioning of classic American sportswear embodies this spirit as demonstrated in their runway debut in New York for Fall 2004.

United Bamboo continues to expand their conceptual reach through collaborations with a diverse community of artists and manufacturers including Terence Koh, Rita Ackerman, James Iha (Smashing Pumpkins), Uniqlo, Converse, Kitsune and Head Porter to name a few.

Today, the United Bamboo brand consists of the main women’s ready-to-wear line, the secondary line, Le Bac, which will re launch as an accessories line in 2012. And the organic room wear line, Bamboo By.

All expertly crafted to meet the standards of an affordable avant-gardism, these multiple offerings have found a home in the first United Bamboo store, designed by famed artist-turned-architect Vito Acconci, which opened in mid-September 2003 in Tokyo, Japan.

United Bamboo continues to push the boundaries of fashion. Promoting a visionary ethos of design, United Bamboo is inspired by and inspires those working independently and within a downtown community of unconventionality, and with hopeful intention, the larger, diverse world beyond.
