We’re not even in 2014 yet, but that isn’t going to stop the Hollywood machine getting its ideas out there. We can be a little more forgiving of animated films’ early announcement, due to the time it takes to get them produced. Disney have announced a feature they are aiming to release in 2018, called MOANA. John Musker and Ron Clements, the guys behind THE PRINCESS AND THE FROG are set to direct, after their adaptation of the Terry Pratchett novel MORT, unfortunately stalled due to copyright issues.

MOANA will be CG animated, although there was talk of developing it as a blend between CG and traditional hand drawn techniques in the style of the Oscar winning short PAPERMAN. Again though, that idea fell through due to the logistics of producing a feature length film in that style. Disney describe MOANA as a ”mythic adventure set around 2000 years ago and across a series of islands in the South Pacific.” Moana herself is described as “a sea-voyaging enthusiast, and the only daughter of a chief in a long line of navigators. When her family needs her help, she sets off on an epic journey. The film will also include demigods and spirits taken from real mythology.” That’s not a lot to go on, but there is also a little piece of concept art too. We’ll bring you more news on this project over the next 4 years.
