Last year was all about the movie musical. This year, the Oscars are going to focus on movie heroes for the 2014 show.

If you aren't exhausted yet by the Golden Globe Awards or the upcoming SAG Awards, the Oscars want to remind you that they'll be here before you know it. While last year was a celebration of movie musicals, this year producers Neil Meron and Craig Zadan are going in a different direction.

On Tuesday, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced that the theme is a salute to movie heroes. In a statement today, Zadan and Meron explained their idea.

They said, "We wanted to unify the show with an entertaining and emotional theme. People around the world go to the movies to be inspired by the characters they see on the screen. By celebrating the gamut of heroes who have enriched our moviegoing experience, we hope to create an evening of fun and joy. And that includes the filmmakers and actors who take risks and stimulate us with provocative subjects and daring characters. They are all heroes in the cinematic landscape."

If you think the show is off the hook for musical numbers, slow down. Remember, the show's producers got their big break on Broadway.

"Of course, there will be no shortage of comedy with Ellen DeGeneres as our host. There may also be a few musical surprises along the way," Zadan and Meron added.

The Academy has been using social media to get its message across quite a bit this year. They're hoping to keep that ratings increase among 18- to 49-year-olds steady after Seth MacFarlane hosted last year.

DeGeneres also got in on the act with a bit of humor as well.

Oscar nominations will be announced on Thursday, Jan. 16 and the show will take place on March 2 live from Hollywood.
