In certain circles, anticipation is off the charts for the third season of the BBC’s Sherlock, the contemporary TV mini-series take on the Sherlock Holmes franchise from co-creators Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss (the current head showrunner and staff writer on Doctor Who, respectively). The season 3 premiere will reteam Benedict Cumberbatch (Star Trek Into Darkness) and Martin Freeman (The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug) as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson, with a new adventure that picks up some time following the cliffhanger ending to the season 2 finale “The Reichenbach Fall.”

Unsurprisingly, given the show’s runaway success in the geek community, Sherlock has been confirmed for a panel at the 2013 International Comic-Con in San Diego later this month. This scoop comes from EW‘s James Hibberd, who is also going to be moderating the Sherlock Comic-Con panel this year.

Freeman will not be in attendance at the Sherlock Comic-Con 2013 panel – due to the ongoing pick-up shoots for the second and third Hobbit installments – nor will Cumberbatch, who has more than half a dozen films arriving in the next two years and will voice/portray via mo-cap the titular dragon in The Desolation of Smaug. Sherlock producer Sue Vertue will be present, along with Moffat and Gatiss (the latter also plays Sherlock’s brother Mycroft on the show).

Chances are, one of the “surprises” at the event will be footage from the season three premiere, “The Empty Hearse,” since filming wrapped on that episode earlier this year.

“The Empty Hearse” will air on the BBC sometime later this year, possibly as soon as October 2013. Meanwhile, EW has confirmed that the third season will premiere on PBS in early 2014, maybe by January 2014. In addition, Sherlock is going to make history, as the first PBS series to ever have a Comic-Con panel (going back to when the annual convention began its run 44 years ago).

It’s a safe bet that the Sherlock producers will refuse to answer or shed much light on the many lingering questions that fans have been waiting to see explained in the third season. That includes the secret behind how Sherlock is still alive, in addition to those rumors – which seem closer to being unconfirmed facts right now – about how the super-sleuth will have competition for Watson’s attention in the future.

Keep you eyes peeled for Screen Rant‘s coverage of the Sherlock panel, once the 2013 International Comic-Con gets underway in a couple weeks on July 18th.
