Instructions
.Satisfy the age requirements. In most states, licensed insurance agents must be at least 18 years old. There is also a residency requirement. In other words, you must reside in the state for which you are seeking an insurance license. This is not to be confused with a non-resident insurance license, which is given to licensed agents seeking to legally do business in a state other than their home state.

.Take the necessary pre-licensing education. Some states require in-class educational hours, while others allow for textbook and home study. To find out state-specific education requirements, contact the Insurance Department in your state.

.Sit for the insurance licensing exam. Upon successfully passing the licensing exam, the insurance agent will be issued a license from the state.

.Get hands-on experience. Being a licensed insurance agent is much different from an experienced licensed insurance agent. If you are serious about having a career in the insurance field, seek hands-on experience by working for an insurance agency. Doing so will help you to take the theory learned in the pre-licensing course and apply it to real-world insurance scenarios. Newly licensed, inexperienced insurance agents soon find out that the theoretical insurance situations as taught in school take on a whole new sense of urgency in the real world.

.Maintain the license by taking continuing education classes. Licensed insurance agents must stay abreast of the latest developments in the insurance field. Therefore, states mandate that insurance agents must take continuing education courses in order to keep their insurance license.
