Instructions
1.Take one year of college insurance courses or have five years of experience in the insurance field. Experience must be at the administrative level.

2.Get approval from the state to take the insurance broker's license examination. You must meet all requirements (these may differ state to state). For instance, those with any felonies on record will not qualify to take the state exam.

3.Pass the state exam to get an auto insurance broker's license. In most cases, you will be unable to discuss insurance policies or other matters, in person or over the phone, without having this license.

4.Attend continuing education courses or seminars as a requirement to keep your insurance broker's license. This varies state to state; for instance, Georgia requires 15 credits every year, while New York requires the same number of credits every two years.

5.Renew your license annually. In some cases, the insurance company you work for will pay the fees for your license.

Tips & Warnings

•Transfer your broker's license state to state if you move. However, New York and Florida are the only two states you cannot transfer an insurance broker's license into from another state.

•Take advantage of courses offered by your employer, if applicable. Many large insurance companies, such as Geico, will hire insurance institutes to teach broker classes at the company.

•Note that rules, regulations and requirements differ from state to state; some states, for instance, may allow experience to waive classroom courses, while others will not.
