How to Get Welfare in Arizona
USINFO | 2013-08-09 14:08

Low-income residents of the state of Arizona may qualify for welfare benefits. Arizona's Department of Economic Security has several financial assistance programs, including a temporary cash assistance program. This program is designed to help individuals and families meet their basic needs while working toward getting back on track to support themselves. To get this cash assistance, residents must fill out an application, complete an interview and provide the requested original documents for verification.

Instructions

  1. Complete the online screening application (see Resources) if you aren't sure whether or not you qualify for the cash assistance program.
  2. Fill out the online application (see Resources) for assistance if the screening tool indicated that you qualify for benefits. You should also complete the application if you were on the borderline of acceptance. If you are uncomfortable providing your personal information online, you can get a paper application at your local Social Services office.
  3. Gather documents to prove all sources of income and resources that you listed on your application. This includes pay stubs, child support statements, interest statements, Social Security statements, 1099s and your most recently filed income taxes.
  4. Compile proof of your identity. This can be a birth certificate, Social Security card, U.S. passport, immigration or naturalization certificate or a driver's license. You must have proof of identity for every individual in the household.
  5. Collect proof of residency. You can prove this with a U.S. birth certificate, U.S. passport, citizenship papers, property tax statement, rental agreement or your most recent utility bill.
  6. Visit your local Social Services office for an in-person visit. You will receive a call to do this once your online application has been reviewed. If you applied in person, you will make your appointment then. Bring all of the documents you gathered and submit them to the case manager. She will photocopy them and give you back your originals.
  7. Wait to receive a letter of acceptance or denial. If you receive a denial letter, you will have a certain number of days to appeal the decision. Follow the directions in the letter when you receive it.
