USINFO | 2013-07-30 11:31

Food stamps and welfare are provided by the federal government for very low income families who need assistance with food and finances. Food stamps are now known as SNAP or the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, and it, along with other assistance services, are provided through local SNAP offices. Applications and all information about status are handled by the office in your community.

Instructions

  1. Locate your local Health and Human Services office. These offices can be located using the telephone business pages and searching for Health and Human Services. They may also be located on the U.S. Department of Agriculture website in the "Apply for SNAP" section. The average wait time in these offices is eight hours but can be shorter depending on the number of appointments the office has. Appointments cannot be made prior to visiting the location.
  2. Gather financial documentation and identification information. This documentation will be copied by the welfare office and will be used to help determine eligibility. The value of total assets in the household usually has to be less than $2000 a year or $3000 if a senior over the age of 62 lives at the residence to qualify.
  3. Complete the application information as instructed by the office. The application will cover each type of service each person in the household needs.
  4. Submit the application. A decision will be made based on the financial documentation provided and the needs assessment tables. The time frame on approval or rejection varies by state but usually takes six to eight weeks.
