Island Slippers

They're not slippers they're my feet!

I purchased my first pair of Island Slippers back in 1988 when I was living in Honolulu and working as a divemaster at Leeward Dive shop in Waianae. That first pair took me from HI to nearly twenty five countries and to over half the states in the union. Over the years I have purchased somewhere in the range of 8-9 sandals and today I own three pair as lately I have found it easier to leave a pair behind in the countries that I return to on a regular basis. Currently I am living in Salvador, Brasil where I am completing work as producer on my first feature film and I wish you sold the sandals here as the folks on my crew all wear Havianas (argh - junk) and when they try on my IS's they are believers.

Over the years I have worn my flip flops hiking to the base of the Grand Canyon (twice), gazing in awe at the Redwoods of Muir Woods too many times to count, production managing on SS Constitution as we sailed the islands, wandering the deserted beaches up/down both coasts of South America, exploring deep into the caves near Poptun Guatemala, re-tracing Ho Chi Minh trail, working as a bartender in Hamburg Germany, and on and. Sure I got strange looks on occasion while wearing them for some of the above activities and of course when wearing them in the snow BUT if it was only a dusting and I wasn't going far, then... why not?

In some ways I think discovering the sandals all those years ago has altered the course of my life as after wearing them for so long I developed a lack of tolerance for shoes. I suspect that I began to choose destinations and work that would allow me to wear only sandals. There is no question that I will buy another few pair in the future as I suspect I will not be changing my lifestyle and will certainly wear out a few more in the course of my wanderings.
