Gillette announced on Thursday morning that “beard balls” that were collected during the public beard shaving of David Ortiz and Shane Victorino are up for auction on eBay. That means bundles of discarded facial hair from baseball players could be yours, if you are the highest bidder.

Gillette said 100 percent of proceeds will go directly to Movember, a global men’s health chairty which encourages men to grow mustaches in the month of November in order to raise funds and awareness for prostate and testicular cancer.

So that’s the good part. The weird part? Everything else about it.

 “Up for auction is this one-of-a-kind, 100 percent authentic, David Ortiz 2013 Championship Beard Ball,” the eBay auction reads. “Not only is this real championship beard hair, it is real championship MVP beard hair. David Ortiz’s beard ball was obtained on November 4 at Gillette’s World Shaving Headquarters in Boston as part of a charity shave-off. Included with the beard ball is the actual Fusion ProGlide Styler used in the shave and a card of authenticity signed by Big Papi himself.”
 
Typically, collecting another person’s hair is something that lands someone in prison or, at the very least, slapped with a restraining order. Alas, this is the land of sports, where normal societal rules apparently don’t apply.

“What happened to those champion chops?” the press release said. “Are they making their way down the drains of Gillette’s World Shave Headquarters? Have they been flushed out into the Atlantic? Are they being used to create Mo’s for Mo Sistas supporting Movember? No. Every strand of the biggest beards of baseball was saved.”

So, there you have it. With bidding starting at more than $100, you can own history … in the form of a man’s shaved facial hair. Hopefully, for everyone’s sake, it will be added to your sports memorabilia collection and not your “Other People’s Hair” collection.
