Class to Night Out: High-Low Dress

Do you struggle with transforming your outfits from day to night? Don’t worry, CF is here to help turn that daily annoyance into a fun challenge. This column focuses on one piece per week, and aims to help you take your look from study sessions in the library to dancing the night away.

Despite their awful nickname, high-low dresses (often called “mullet dresses”) have nothing to do with tacky ’90s trends or the hits of Billy Ray Cyrus. These dresses, characterized by a hem that’s longer in back than it is in front, are a fun incarnation of the asymmetrical trend that’s been wooing fashionistas for seasons now.

Though they may be just another passing trend, I think high-low dresses have a lot of potential to be both fashion-forward and versatile. This week, I’ll be showing you how to wear a bright yellow high-low dress to class and a night out.

Try a bold look for class by pairing your bright dress with an even brighter statement necklace. I love the way the yellow and pink work together here to make sure all eyes are on you. Keep your accessories simple, with colorful but understated flip flops and a cute printed tote. Wrap a neutral belt around your waist to keep the look chic but casual.

Sticking with the statement necklace theme, try out something even wilder for night, with lots of bold color and shine. A bright clutch in a contrasting color (love mint for summer!) will keep you in the spotlight. Beige peeptoe pumps and simple but stunning gold earrings are subtle enough to keep this fun look sophisticated.
