Triple-Decker Clock

In the 1830s, during the American Empire Period, Elias Ingraham invented the three-deck, or triple-decker clock. Its tall case accommodated the drop needed for a weight-driven clock, as the springs required for a spring-driven clock could not yet be manufactured in the United States. Within fifteen years, smaller clock cases became more popular, and the production of triple-decker clocks began to wane.
