Joe Biden’s Wife: Jill Biden

Joe Biden’s Wife: Jill Biden, Jill Biden nearly made a woman cry Sunday. Lancaster resident Katie Welsh was one of about 800 spectators at Rushville Middle School to see Vice President Joe Biden speak. After the event, Jill Biden, Joe’s wife, who introduced her husband at the rally, shook hands with Welsh.

While the excitement of the handshake nearly brought the 22 year-old to tears, she said she also took some of the vice president’s statements to heart.

“I like how they talked about the automobile (industry) because my dad sells cars and I think the truth about that needs to be out there,” Welsh said. “I love that they both touched on that.”

Joe Biden called Mitt Romney advertisements about the Ohio auto industry “shameful” and said a specific ad that refers to American automakers moving jobs out of Ohio and to China on Obama’s watch was inaccurate in its attacks on vulnerable and fearful residents.

Rose Hallarn, of Carroll, said she was surprised by the number of Republican lies Joe Biden pointed out. Although she found the speech informative, she said there was one area in which the Democrats should copy the Republican strategy, referring specifically to Romney’s October speech in Lancaster.

“The Republicans introduced all their candidates for the county, whereas the Democrats didn’t,” she said. “They need to help their local government, also.”

George Hallarn, Rose’s husband, is a Democratic candidate for county commissioner.

Although local candidates were left out, Biden made a statement supporting Sen. Sherrod Brown to a loud ovation from the crowd.

Biden went on to get Katie Destadio’s attention when he said an Obama win Tuesday would mean 100,000 more math and science jobs in the next four years.

“I thought it was a great speech,” the Columbus resident said. “I thought everything he had to say was right on target. I just got out of college and I was fortunate to be one of the few that got a job right out of college. So I definitely think he was right on with that.”

Floyd Kirkland predicted a win Tuesday for Obama.

“I’m a Democrat and I voted for pretty much a straight Democratic ticket,” the Pickerington resident said. “I think it’s going to be close in a few states, but I don’t think it’s going to be close in Ohio. Ohio, Wisconsin, Michigan, I don’t think is going to be close at all. But Florida could be tight and some of the other states. But I think Obama and Biden are going to win electorally and the popular vote, so there won’t be any mix-ups there.”

Ohio University student Lutetia Pennington said Biden’s speech was invigorating.

“It’s all really good that the whole community is coming together,” she said. “It really felt good. I love how articulate Joe Biden was.”

Biden raised his voice several times in making a point, such as when he said there is no quit in the American people. That demonstrative style was not lost on Paul Johnson, of Canal Winchester.

“I love Joe Biden,” he said. “He speaks in a way that we all kind of understand and I’m just thrilled to have him here in Fairfield County. I think it’s a winning ticket. I think he connects with my values and my family’s values all the time. I’m sold on Obama and Biden. I think they’re the right guys and I’m just here to support them.”

Johnson said that the Democratic ticket is more relateable than the Republican one and that made Biden a perfect speaker for Fairfield County.

What Johnson saw as a good fit, however, Teresa Rosser found surprising. The Lancaster resident, who attended wearing buttons for Planned Parenthood and Obama, said she was taken aback by the decision to appear in a traditional conservative county.

“Typically, Fairfield County is a Republican area so I figured they would focus more on the Democratic areas,” Rosser said. “I saw the president at OSU at his first campaign trip and I just really wanted to see Joe Biden, I’m a big fan. I think he gives a lot of information. I’m just really excited to be backing Obama and Biden.”
