The successful marriage of Landra and Harry Reid shows the importance of supporting and respecting one another.

Landra met Harry at Basic High School in Henderson, Nevada.

Harry: "As soon as we became acquainted, I asked Landra to homecoming, but she was already committed. So I tried again and we just went on a regular date, to a movie at the Victory Theater. I borrowed Larry Perryman's car, because I didn't have a car of my own. Larry's car didn't have a starter that worked, so you had to park it on a hill and coast to get it started. So there we were after the movie, on our first date, pushing the car. This is not the way you want things to go. But then, well, I looked over at Landra, and that smile just redeemed the night. She was of such good cheer about it. Who cares about the car! Something that could have been embarrassing became funny. There are moments that turn a life, and that stay with you until the last breath. This was one of those moments for me. And that was it. Somehow, she would choose me. Landra Gould and I just belonged together."

Harry and Landra were married on September 12, 1959 at the Mormon church in Henderson, Nevada. Their wedding ceremony was performed by Bishop J. Marlan Walker. Landra and Harry had their wedding dinner at Fong's Garden in Las Vegas, Nevada. Their honeymoon was one night in Mesquite, Nevada.

Harry: "It was an intimate, happy affair. We left our friends after our wedding and dined alone, because when you're eloping against her parents' wishes, you generally don't alert the media.Months in the planning, the wedding had gone off without a hitch. The secret had remained a secret to all but those gathered at the church for the unusual ceremony."

Harry: "We've been together since high school, so of course no important decision would happen without her. In times of triumph and trouble, Landra is without fail the first person I turn to."
