  1. The poverty lines vary according to the size of the family unit. In 2011, poverty lines for the contiguous 48 states and the District of Columbia consisted of the following breakdown:
    1. 1 household member: $10,890
    2. 2 household members: $14,710
    3. 3 household members: $18,530
    4. 4 household member: $22,350
    5. 5 household members: $26,170
    6. 6 household member: $29,990
    7. 7 household member: $33,810
    8. 8 household member: $37,630
    9. (For family units with more than 8 members, add $3,820 for each additional member. Please be noted that the federal poverty lines are higher for Alaska and Hawaii.)
