Walgreen Co., doing business as Walgreens, is the largest drug retailing chain in the United States. As of January 31, 2012, the company operates 8,300 stores in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and Guam. It was founded in Chicago, Illinois in 1901. Walgreens' headquarters are in the Chicago suburb of Deerfield.

 

In 1991 Walgreens started the business unit Walgreens Health Services (WHS) after deciding to expand on the services provided by its mail service division. Walgreens Mail Service provides mail order pharmacy services for maintenance medications. 

 

Walgreens provides access to consumer goods and services, plus pharmacy, health and wellness services in America through its retail drugstores, Walgreens Health Services division, and Walgreens Health and Wellness division. Its online pharmacy also makes those services available to its customers.

The VIPPS accreditation program (Verified Internet Pharmacy Practice Sites), is a strong indicator of an Internet pharmacy’s compliance with state and federal laws and regulations and NABP's criteria. 

 

The VIPPS accreditation process provides for ongoing evaluation of an Internet pharmacy’s practice. Internet pharmacies function in much the same way as traditional pharmacies and are subject to the same rules, regulations, and patient care requirements as brick-and-mortar pharmacies.
