American Dream Homes: What You'll Pay in 5 Cities
CNN Money | 2013-12-01 20:22

How much does it cost to buy a four-bedroom, two-bath home in the U.S.? Here's a look at five cities, according to Coldwell Banker's annual survey of 1,900 real estate markets.

1. Malibu, Calif.

Average listing price in area: $2.15 million
This home: $2.3 million
Description: 4 beds, 2.5 baths, 2,100 square feet

Buyers pay a big premium to live among Malibu's rich and famous.A typical four-bedroom sells for $2.15 million, making it the most expensive market on Coldwell Banker's list. Houses right on the beach are even more expensive, going for an average of $4 million or more.

In this house, located a few hundred feet from the water, the traditional exterior design disguises a strikingly modern interior featuring vaulted ceilings, walls of windows and an open floor plan.

2. Los Gatos, Calif.

Average listing price in area: $1.36 million
This home: $1.66 million
Description: 3 beds, 3 baths, 2,800 square feet

For many home buyers the main selling point of Los Gatos isn't the scenic vista of the Santa Cruz Mountains, but rather the easy commute to Silicon Valley's top employers.

That convenience costs a lot of cash, though. A typical four-bedroom in town costs close to $1.4 million, according to Coldwell Banker.

This California ranch house is on a two-acre hillside lot with plenty of windows. A recent renovation included hardwood floors and an updated kitchen. The finished basement could either be used as a home office or a fourth bedroom.

3. Great Neck, N.Y.

Average listing price in area: $1.1 million
This home: $1.6 million
Description: 4 beds, 4 baths, 2,168 square feet

Home to the fictional Great Gatsby, Great Neck was one of New York City's earliest suburbs and its convenient commute -- 30 minutes by train to Manhattan -- still attracts wealthy buyers looking for a little more elbow room than the city can provide.

Home shoppers can find homes like this solid, 1937 brick Colonial on a quiet one-way street. It's been kept in mint condition and features a master suite and a full basement with a playroom for the kids, a laundry room and a cedar closet.

4. Orono, Minn.

Average listing price in area: $1.25 million
This home: $1.27 million
Description: 5 beds, 2 baths, 4,950 square feet

Practically free of violent crime, Orono's small-town charm and proximity to downtown Minneapolis -- just 20 miles away -- has made it an attractive place to live among wealthy commuters.

As an added bonus, the area is surrounded by lakes, offering residents plenty of outdoor activities.

This sprawling home, for example, has 115 feet of frontage on Forest Lake and comes with a dock, screened-in porch and in-ground pool.

5. Weston, Mass.

Average listing price in area: $1.23 million
This home: $1.19 million
Description: 4 beds, 2.5 baths, 3,214 square feet

The wealthiest suburb of Boston, Weston's home prices are far from cheap. A typical four-bedroom can easily cost more than $1.2 million.

But people are willing to pay up for the bucolic landscape -- there's 2,000 acres of protected recreational land with 90 miles of trails and scenic overlooks -- and its close proximity to the city.

This large home is located less than 17 miles from Boston's business district. It features an eat-in kitchen, a formal dining room, a sun room and a porch. Outside, there are flower beds and lawns and a pool.
