The Great Storm on Saturn
USINFO | 2013-07-17 13:08

A huge storm developed in the northern hemisphere of Saturn late in 2010, just as the hemisphere was experiencing spring for the first time in 30 years. A storm this big has only been observed six times since 1876 on the surface of this gaseous giant.

Coincidently, an orbiting spacecraft named Cassini was able to have ringside seats for this event and has taken some downright breathtaking photographs. Search the internet using Cassinin and Saturn storm. The images you will see cannot be described with words.

Please support a favorite astronomy site of mine, EarthSky.org. This site is downright terrific and was the inspiration for this blog and has graciously allowed me to use their information. If I have a question about space, or really any subject related to science, this is one of the first sites I go to.

It was amateur astronomers that first spotted the storm in Saturn's northern hemisphere in early December 2010, when the ringed gas giant was rising in our world's predawn sky. So this is good motivation for people like myself to go out and look at the sky and ask questions about what you see.
