    发展历史

    1886年，匹兹堡大学医学院的前身——西宾夕法尼亚医学院成立。1892年，隶属于西宾夕法尼亚大学。1908年，医学院正式更名为匹兹堡大学医学院。匹兹堡大学医学院在成立之初仅根据非正式协议在当地医院进行临床和教学工作。1930年，匹兹堡大学医学院借助与其相邻的长老会医院（1893年建立），兴建一所“大学医学中心”。1938年，长老会医院新院正式开业。随后，匹兹堡大学在此基础上建立了Falk诊所、儿童医院、眼耳科医院、Libby Steele Magee医院、长老会总医院、妇女医院和市立医院。1949年，匹兹堡大学与长老会医院签订附属协议，确定了双方在医疗、教学、研究三方面的紧密联系。1951年，老会医院更名为长老会大学医院。1955年，病毒学家Jonas E. Salk (1914-1995) 研制的世界上第一个脊髓灰质炎病毒疫苗在匹兹堡大学诞生。

    1965年，匹兹堡大学与长老会大学医院、Magee和妇女医院、眼耳科医院、儿童医院，以及医学院管理的Western精神病学研究所和诊所，共同匹兹堡大学健康中心（UHCP）。1969年，Montefiore医院加入UHCP。1970年代，Thomas Detre (1924-2010) 领导Western精神病学研究所跻身全美前列，也带动了匹兹堡大学医学临床和基础研究的迅速崛起和行政系统的重新整合。

    1981年，被誉为“现代器官移植之父”的Thomas E. Starzl (1926-) 来到匹兹堡大学，建立起世界领先水平的移植中心，并于1985年成立匹兹堡大学移植研究所（1996年更名为Thomas E. Starzl移植研究所）。

    1986年，UHCP所属的长老会大学医院、Falk诊所、匹兹堡癌症研究所和眼耳科医院重新组成由Detre领导的医学和卫生保健部（MHCD）。1990年，随着Montefiore医院的加入，MHCD正式更名为“匹兹堡大学医学中心”（UPMC）。1994年，UPMC与相关的专科和社区医院组成Tri-State健康系统，并成立了一个盈利性健康保险部门（UPMC健康计划）。1996年，UPMC接收了South Side、Aliquippa 和Braddock等医院。1997年，与UPMC合作的St. Margaret Memorial、Shadyside和Passavant等医院并入UPMC。1998年，Magee妇女医院也并入UPMC。

    1998年，由于医学中心规模的不断扩张，更出于财政因素考虑，匹兹堡大学决定调整与UPMC之间的关系，从法律上确定UPMC成为一个独立的法人单位。UPMC全面管理临床业务，匹兹堡大学继续负责学术研究事务。此后，UPMC又相继兼并了匹兹堡儿童医院（2001年）和Mercy医院（2008年）。目前，UPMC包括覆盖西宾夕法尼亚地区的大约20所教学、社区和专科医院，以及400个门诊点、超过50个物理、职业、语言和专科治疗机构，14个退休和长期护理站点，还有大量国际和盈利性投资。匹兹堡大学癌症研究所（UPCI）于1984年由NK细胞的发现者Ronald Herberman创建，是获得NCI命名的历史最短的综合癌症研究所。2002年，Hillman癌症中心在UPMC的Shadyside院区落成，成为UPCI总部所在地。

    Thomas P. Detre (1924.05.17-2010.10.09) 匈牙利后裔犹太人，毕业于罗马大学医学院，曾任耶鲁-纽黑文医院精神科主任。1973年进入匹兹堡大学，担任Western精神病学研究所所长和匹兹堡大学医学院精神病学系主任。由于倡导基础研究与临床医疗的有机结合，推动了匹兹堡大学在医学领域的迅速发展，也促成UPMC的建立。
