Bell Motor Co. is negotiating to sell its 85-year-old General Motors dealership in Leonardtown, said Gary Bell Sr., the company's vice president.

The second-oldest continuous Chevrolet dealership in the country announced in September its plans to close as falling sales, low consumer confidence, difficult customer financing options because of a growing credit crisis and increasing competition among auto manufacturers eliminated opportunity for profitability.

Bell said the company is waiting on the General Motors Corporation to approve a potential deal with Winegardner Auto Group, also a family business with dealerships in Prince Frederick, Fort Washington and Brandywine.

"Unofficially that's who we're speaking to," Bell said, noting discussions have been held with a total of three or four "local" dealerships interested in taking over the business. "GM has to accept them [first]. They have to meet GM guidelines financially and a lot of different things. We're hoping to have something in place by end of the month. We're open until something happens."

Bell would not say how much the dealership's sale price will be. "I don't think you can put a price on it. Right now, it's actually not worth a whole lot," he said.

"The history with that place and the reputation, it seemed like a good opportunity" to expand the company's presence in Southern Maryland, said Chuck Winegardner, president of Winegardner Auto Group, of why the company is interested in taking over Bell Motor Co.

Winegardner said Bell Motor's built-in service and parts shops are most valuable to his company. The company would move some current employees down to St. Mary's while keeping some Bell Motor employees to run the whole business.
