Police are investigating the homicide which occurred on Flatbush Avenue early Thursday.
A gunman shot and killed a 53-year-old man in Brooklyn early Thursday.
Police and witnesses said the gunman -- a man dressed entirely in black -- blasted away at his victim on Flatbush Ave. near Cortelyou Road at about 1:15 a.m.
"I heard five shots," said one nearby resident, who didn't wish to give his name.
"I could hear someone yelling 'Help, help!' and I then I heard someone calling the police saying 'My friend's been shot!'"
When police arrived, the victim — whose name was withheld pending family notification — was found sprawled out on the sidewalk with a gunshot wound to chest.
Paramedics rushed him to Kings County Hospital, but doctors were unable to save him.
Police sources said the victim, who has a rap sheet stretching back to 1984 — mostly for drug possession — was staying in Flatbush with friends for the summer.
Detectives were working to piece together a motive for the slaying but have ruled out robbery since he still had money on him when he was found, sources said.
The shooter — who was last seen running down Cortelyou Road — was still at large Thursday morning.
Anyone with information regarding this incident is urged to contact police. Calls to Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS are confidential.
