The North Dakota mother accused of killing her 4-day-old child by snorting the powerful pain reliever hydrocodone and then breastfeeding the infant pleaded not guilty Wednesday in a Fargo, N.D., court.

Reanne Pederson, 32, of West Fargo, faces five years in prison on negligent homicide charges after she got high June 13 and then breastfed her son Avery, according to Inforum News. When Pederson woke up a half hour later, her son was unresponsive.

Avery died the next day at the same hospital where he was born.

Pederson, who admitted to using drugs during her pregnancy, told police she believed she accidentally smothered the child. But authorities claim the six-pound infant suffered dangerous effects from the toxic drugs Pederson ingested, WDAY reported.

"That morning I called social services and the West Fargo Police Department called me. And I said, 'As far as I'm concerned, if anything happens to him, she killed him,' " grandmother Lisa Miller told Valley News Live.

Pederson, out on $5,000 bail, was in Crass County court Wednesday.
