GATLINBURG (WATE) - Federal authorities have indicted a man for cutting down trees and setting up a residence in a part of the Cherokee National Forest.

According to court documents, forest rangers recognized Terry L. Sharkey from previous encounters, including one from December 2013 in which Sharkey was caught taking residence.

Later in April, officers were investigating a fire, when they followed a trail and found a camp with a blue dome tent, a red Rebel flag, and a bath tub made of rock in the ground. Sharkey was seen a week later using the same trail which was near the campsite.

On Sept. 14, 2014, investigators followed a trail and found a nearly completed three-room log cabin with four walls but no ceiling. A blue dome tent matching the description of the one found in April was found beside the cabin. Sharkey had used oak and poplar trees from the area to build his cabin.

Sharkey has been indicted for destroying forest land and constructing and occupying a residence in the forest from April to September.
