Combat knife is popular among the elite U.S. Navy Seals.

When it comes to fighting and field work, U.S. Navy Seals prefer to use the Commander knife.

Folding Fighting Knife
The Commander is known as a "folding fighting knife," and is made by Emerson Knives Inc. based in Torrance, California. The Commander has been in service with the U.S. military since 1998. The knife is mostly used by the U.S. Navy – especially the elite U.S. Navy Seals. Soldiers use the Commander knife for hand-to-hand fighting and to help them accomplish tasks in the field – whether opening a can of food or cutting off a parachute. About 3,000 Commander knives have been built for the military as of 2011.

Following a request from the U.S. Navy Seals for an aggressive combat knife, the Emerson company designed a weapon that has a large, hooked blade with a serrated double edged spine. The blade of the Commander knife was actually designed to resemble the horn of a Rhinoceros. As such, the weapon is sometimes referred to by soldiers as the "Rhino."

Winning Awards
The Commander knife has a blade that is 3.75 inches long and made from a combination of steel and titanium. The butt of the knife features a hole that can be used to tie a lanyard. Some models of the knife are made with a partially serrated blade that can be used for cutting seatbelts and webbing. The Commander knife was awarded Blade Magazine’s "Overall Knife of the Year" in 1999.
