A year after the "Veronica Mars" movie launched its historic Kickstarter campaign, raising a record-setting $5.7 million and sparking many debates about the future of crowdfunding, the resulting feature will open in theaters.

Rob Thomas told Entertainment Weekly that the movie, which will be titled "Veronica Mars," will be released by Warner Bros. on March 14, 2014, a year and a day after the Kickstarter campaign launched.

While the initial plan was for a limited theatrical release followed by a VOD/digital one, according to Thomas, the film will be getting a wider national release, though the number of screens has yet to be determined.

The movie will continue the story of no-longer-teen-detective Veronica Mars (Kristen Bell), who's moved from Neptune to New York City, but is forced to return home after 10 years when her ex Logan (Jason Dohring) is accused of murder. Also reprising their roles from the TV series, which ran from 2004-2007, are Enrico Colantoni, Tina Majorino, Percy Daggs III and others, as the film will also involve Veronica's 10 year high school reunion.

Thomas directed the film, which he co-wrote with Diane Ruggiero. It was shot over 23 days this summer. "We are a low budget movie with big set pieces and 60 speaking roles," Thomas told EW. "A murder mystery in a house would have been more cost effective. But I think we have managed to pull it off." Here's Bell and company talking about the film, with footage:
