Katie Couric, best known as an anchor and correspondent for The Today Show, 60 Minutes, and CBS Evening News, is joining Yahoo, where she will serve as the network's global news anchor. Beginning early next year, Couric will start creating features for the Yahoo News homepage and leading a team of Yahoo correspondents. Couric was also rumored to begin hosting an interview show for Yahoo, but no specific shows or features have been announced yet.

"I'VE ALWAYS RESPECTED KATIE FOR HER THOUGHTFUL, CHARISMATIC APPROACH TO JOURNALISM."

For the past two years, Couric has worked for ABC as a special correspondent and served as host of the daytime talk showKatie, a role that she'll continue even once she's joined Yahoo. Today's announcement by Yahoo comes after The Hollywood Reporter rumored Couric's move last week.

All Things D reports that ABC's owner, Disney, holds the rights to Couric's digital output for the term of her ongoing contract with the network. That doesn't appear to have been a huge hiccup though: ABC News and Yahoo are major partners — with Yahoo syndicating a lot of its content — and Couric seemingly won't be leaving ABC entirely behind for now.

"I've always respected Katie for her thoughtful, charismatic approach to journalism," Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer wrote in a post announcing Couric's new role. "Katie is dynamic, savvy and has a way of connecting with viewers that I really admire."

Couric is just the latest high-profile figure to be hired by Yahoo in the past few months.New York Times technology columnist David Pogue left the paper to work for Yahoo in October; Megan Liberman, a deputy news editor for The New York Times, was hired as editor-in-chief of Yahoo News in September; and Matt Bai, chief political correspondent for the New York Times Magazine, came on as a national political columnist for Yahoo News just two weeks ago. We haven't seen exactly what Mayer is building yet, but it looks like her new news team is nearly ready for action.
