What Will the Best-Actress Nominees Wear on Oscar Night?

Your guess is as good as ours, but here are some dresses we'd like to see the best-actress nominees wear. We rounded up dreamlike frocks from recent fashion shows around the globe and paired each with a female Oscar contender according to her usual style choices. A word of advice for the night’s leading ladies: forget practicing your speech—we really just care that you know how to work your couture for the cameras! After all, you may be deprived of a little gold man, but being on a worst-dressed list could sting even more.

Could the devil wear Chanel? This dramatic couture gown is elegant, sophisticated, and slightly covered up, the style hallmarks of Meryl Streep.

Helen Mirren is a veteran when it comes to the red carpet, and the 64-year-old actress always chooses something classic. She also often wears dresses that cover her arms, and this sophisticated Carolina Herrera garment manages to do that but also show some skin with a regal bare-shoulder cut.

Left, Carey Mulligan at the SAG awards. From PatrickMcMullan.com. Right, Our Elie Sabb Spring 2010 Couture pick. From WWD.

Carey Mulligan clearly marches to her own fashion beat. Recently revealing to PeopleStylewatch that she would not be taking the advice of Vogue editor Anna Wintour, who suggested that the actress wear something short to the Oscars, Mulligan said, “I was like ‘No, that is so not what I had in my head when I was six years old!’” With her short haircut, which would work well with a sweetheart neckline, and warm complexion, Mulligan would look picture perfect in this gold Elie Saab number.

Left, Gabourey Sidibe at the Golden Globes awards, January 17, 2010. From PatrickMcMullan.com. Right, Our Marchesa Fall 2010 R.T.W. pick. From WWD.

Said to be working with Marchesa to create something special for the big night, Gabourey Sidibe has impressed critics with her solid red-carpet choices. A woman with curves, Sidibe has been choosing empire-waist gowns, and this Marchesa dress fits the bill. The detail at the neckline extends over the tops of the arms, a problem area for some women, and bright white would really pop against her complexion.

Left, Sandra Bullock at this year's SAG awards, January 23. From PatrickMcMullan.com. Right, Our Marchesa Fall 2010 R.T.W. pick. From WWD.

Sandra Bullock, nominated for her performance in The Blind Side, needs something radiant—and this Marchesa dress screams "winner." At the SAG awards, the actress wore a fitted Alexander McQueen gown that accentuated her toned physique, and this ruffled number has a similar affect throughout the bodice.
