Big Wangs, Los Angeles

Tired of the too-glitzy Hollywood club scene, co-owner Joe Barker wanted to build a place for a young, hip clientele that doesn't need a velvet rope, sky-high prices and snooty service to consider the night a success. Big Wangs, his new venture with partner P.J. Brill, takes itself much less seriously than its celeb-magnet neighbors to the north. The drink menu includes beers at very un-Hollywood prices and colorful concoctions like the Wang Banger, a Red Bull shooter that, ahem, "tastes like Tang (and we don't mean Poon)!" Almost every night features specials on food and drink: Mondays, pizza and a pitcher costs $10; Tijuana Tuesdays serve Tecate, frozen margaritas and tequila shots for just $2 from 7pm to close; Wednesdays host the Lord of the Wings eating contest as well as karaoke.—Enid Portuguez

Don't expect subtlety at a place called Big Wangs. With three locations in Los Angeles, these sports bars are about large amounts of food and drink, served in front of HDTVs and projector screens. The customer can order the usual burgers, wings, pizzas, and beers on tap, but also on the menu are Heart Attack fries (covered in bacon and alfredo sauce), and cocktails served in 34 oz. Steins.
