If your daughter loves the American Girl movies or has an American Girl doll, she will love having an American Girl birthday party. Create crafts, make treats and have fun activities that delight the imagination and hearts of young girls who love dolls.

Tea Party
• Have a birthday party with a doll tea party theme. Make your own invitations by cutting out teapot shapes on card stock and letting your daughter decorate them. Write the party details on the inside, asking the girls to bring their American Girl dolls, or any favorite doll, for tea.

Set up a cupcake-making activity with tubs of frosting, confetti candy and candy jimmies. Place a pink tablecloth on a table, and use cloth napkins and china. Use vintage tea cups (these can be found at thrift stores) for the "tea." Fill an old teapot with apple juice, lemonade or sweet iced tea.
Set a platter of peanut butter and jelly, and ham and cheese finger sandwiches on the table. Let the girls serve themselves and their dolls snacks and tea. Encourage discussion of what they like about their dolls.

Crafts
• Plan an American Girl-style birthday party craft activity the girls can take home. Take pictures of the girls with their dolls. If you have a printer suited for printing photo images, print the images.

Set up a craft table where the girls can create frames for their pictures out of plain matte frames you can buy at a drugstore or a dollar store. Give them paint markers to decorate the white frames. Attach the photos to the back of the frame with masking tape.

Or purchase small wooden boxes the girls can decorate as jewelry boxes for their dolls by adding paint, sequins and faux jewels.

Another possibility is a purse-making activity. Purchase felt fabric and cut out several rectangles that are 5 inches wide and 11 inches long for an easy-to-make, over-the-shoulder doll purse. Show the girls how to fold the rectangle so the top section flops over to make a purse flap. Let them attach the sides of the purse together with fabric glue, and add rickrack, buttons, sequins or ribbons. Help them attach a grosgrain ribbon purse handle with needle and thread.

Kits
• Choose one of the American Girl birthday party kits that include activities centered around each theme, such as the Pajama Jam Party, the Totally Tropical Party and Samantha's Mystery Party, which involves a mystery-solving game.

The kits come with invitations, decorations, place settings, party favors, thank-you notes and crafts. These can be purchased at American Girl stores or online.

Kit Kittredge
• Order Kit Kittredge theme party invitations online (see References). Let your daughter fill them out, inviting her friends for a birthday party sleepover. Ask the girls to bring their dolls.

Order pizza and have cake for dessert. Open gifts. Let the girls have some time playing with their dolls before changing into their pajamas. Put "Kit Kittredge an American Girl" in the DVD player and let them watch it under the covers or sprawled out on the floor with their dolls.

Party Favors
• Give each girl a small American Girl book. These are well-written stories about American Girl characters, which the girls will enjoy reading. Put it in a colored favor bag, along with stickers, little bags of colored glass stones and American Girl mini-magazines.
