The New York Stock Exchange was founded in 1792. Members trade options, futures, cash equities, fixed-income and exchange-traded products. The NYSE is open for business Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Eastern time. The NYSE and its affiliated markets are closed for certain federal holidays and religious holidays.

Birthdays
• The NYSE is closed on Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday, which is typically observed the third Tuesday in January. NYSE is also closed on the third Monday in February, on what is commonly known as Presidents Day. Because of Exchange Rule 51, the NYSE refers to the holiday as Washington's Birthday and is closed for business on that day.

Federal Holidays
• New Year's Day, always on Jan. 1, is a market holiday for the NYSE. The exchange is also closed for Memorial Day, which is observed on the last Monday in May. Independence Day, otherwise known as the Fourth of July, is a market holiday. If the holiday falls on a weekend, it is observed on the Friday before or the Monday after July 4. The NYSE is always closed for Labor Day, which is the first Monday in September. It is also closed for Thanksgiving, the fourth Thursday in November. Additionally, the market closes at 1 p.m. Eastern time the Friday after Thanksgiving.

Religious Holidays
• The NYSE is closed in observance of two religious holidays. Good Friday is always the Friday before Easter Sunday. The date of Easter changes each year, and the Good Friday holiday may fall anywhere from April 2 to May 6. The NYSE also closes for Christmas day, which is observed on Dec. 25. If the holiday falls on a weekend, it is observed on the Friday before the holiday or the Monday after.
