The Steps to Follow When Moving Out of State

Moving can be a stressful experience. This is especially so if you are moving out of state, as there are different steps to take to validate your relocation. For instance, one of the first steps is to obtain a driver's license in the new state. If you are preparing to move out of state, use a checklist to make sure you take care of all the details and logistics.

License and Vehicle Registrations
• When you move out of state, you are required to obtain a driver's license in the new state, which will, by default, invalidate the driver's license held in the old state. Visit the DMV within a few days upon arriving in the new state to obtain this license. While at the DMV, register any and all vehicles including motor vehicles, boats or other items owned. To validate registration, have these vehicles inspected within the time frame specified, which is 10 days in many states.

Insurance
• Alert all of your insurers -- medical, homeowner, life and automobile, for instance -- of your move. Your existing insurers may or may not provide coverage for you in the new state. If not, arrange for new policies to take effect immediately upon the move so that you have no gaps in coverage that may expose your liability.

Personal Records
• Visit your physician, dentist and, if you have children, the school to request copies of complete records. Alternatively, contact these providers to request that records be sent to new providers, if you already know the names and addresses of the providers in the new state. Be advised that you will be required to sign a form to authorize the release of records.

Utilities
• Contact your current utility companies to cancel services. Ideally, call providers a week or so in advance, in case companies need to send a representative to the house to uninstall equipment -- cable or satellite dishes, for instance -- or to read gas or electric meters. Contact providers in your new state to arrange for service men to visit the house immediately after your arrival. Specifically, contact cable, telephone, Internet, electric, water, gas and sewage companies and arrange an account in your name or to have the account of the previous homeowner transferred to your name.

Change of Address
• Contact your banking and financial institutions to alert them of the change of address. Depending on the state to which you are relocating, you may have to change banks if there are no local branches in the new area. Contact creditors, such as student loan lenders, and any other important parties to advise them of the change of address. Visit the post office to complete a Change of Address form so that your mail is forwarded.
