Moab man embraces simple life living in cave

Daniel Suelo is a 48-year-old American man living in a cave near Moab, Utah. He was reported to stop using money in the 2000 autumn. Suelo told when he lived with money, he was always lacking. Suelo graduated from the University of Colorado with a degree in anthropology. He used to have cash, a bank account and dream of becoming a doctor. In 1987, after several years as an assistant lab technician in Colorado hospitals, he joined the Peace Corps and was sent to anEcuadoran village in the Andes. His task was supposed to monitor the health of people in the area, teach first-aid and deliver medicine. Suelo’s proudest achievement was delivering three babies.
The village has been getting richer for the last recent ten years. During two years, he witnessed how villagers adopted themodern economy. They sold such food as potatoes, corn and beans from their fields for cash then used money to buy what the needed from soda, white flour, refined sugar to noodles. However, the more they spent, the more their health declined. Suelo could measure the deterioration based on his charts.
Until 1999, he lived in a Buddhist monastery in Thailand and saved enough money for the flight. From there, he traveled to India where he found many interesting things about himself. He wished to be a sadhu.
On a warm day in early spring, he found a note signed with a smiley face “Chris, feel free to use anything, eat anything” in the cave where he used to live. The cave has the same size as a bathroom with enough items including pots, a stove, buckets of beans and rice, bed and so on.
When night falls, he sits on the cliff and mimics a raven’s call. Suelo built the entrance to his cave by himself and make a staircase by huge rocks. His skin becomes black while hair looks like a bird’s nest because of scrambling in the underbrush. Suelo shared his thought that he would do what creatures had been doing for millions of years for retirement.
