Milliner Stephen Jones has secured himself a new private client - Barbie. "She came into the salon for her Christmas morning hat and left with five glamorous outfits," laughed the milliner.

Jones has created Christmas-inspired looks for the famous doll, but we're not only talking headwear. In a total first, the designer and Central Saint Martin's fashion graduate has extended his remit to make five top-to-toe couture outfits: Holly Surprise Barbie, Toffee Ice Barbie, Santa Baby Barbie, Snowglobe Barbie and Christmas Tree Barbie whose headpiece is a light up tree powered with a battery pack craftily hidden in the parcel at her feet.

"The inspiration behind the looks is traditional Christmas symbolism such as holly, reindeer, and snow," he explained, citing his particular favourite as the Holly Surprise outfit, "very Barbie and the robin on her head is so cute."

But did working on such a small scale present any challenges? "The fabrics have to have a lot of thought for example velvet on a human being looks luxurious, but on a Barbie it looks like fake fur."

However, although the project has been a fun diversion, Jones is reverting back to hats in the immediate future at least. "If only Barbie was 6ft with a 39" bust, 21" waist and 33" hip. And human..."

The dolls, each priced at £250, will be available from Friday 15 November, within the Barbie department at Selfridges new London's Toy Shop.
