History
Citizens Bank and Trust Company is the second oldest independent community bank in the State of Virginia. With that said the following is a short history of this great institution.
On the 4th day of August, 1873, the Circuit Court of Nottoway granted a charter of incorporation for Citizens Bank and the Bank modestly took its place among the financial institutions of the State. The first and most important act of the new institution was the adoption of its policy, which was and has been, that it would not prosper on the misfortunes of its customers or of the community in which it was located, but would use its resources and whatever ability was possessed by its officers and directors for the benefit of the community and share the prosperity to which it contributed.
William Hodges Mann was selected as the first president of Citizens Bank and served as such until he was elected governor of the State of Virginia in 1910.
In 1921 Citizens Bank and Trust Company moved into the building where the Main Office and Corporate Headquarters still operate today. Located on the corner of South Main and Elm Streets the building was a two story, grey-brick, stone-trimmed facility with the landmark clock over the entrance way.
In 1973 Citizens Bank and Trust Company opened the second office in Nottoway County in the town of Crewe, Virginia. The third office was opened in Burkeville, Virginia in 1985. With three offices in Nottoway County, Citizens Bank expanded into Amelia County in 1988. The fourth office was opened in 1991 when Citizens purchased the office of First Colonial Savings and Loan, located in the Blackstone Shopping Center on Route 40. The success of Citizens Bank and Trust in Nottoway and Amelia County prompted interest in the Prince Edward market and the first office located in Farmville was opened in 1993. The second office in Prince Edward was opened in 1996.
The Chesterfield office was opened in May 2004 and Colonial Heights was opened in April 2005. In November 2006, Citizens Bank and Trust Company expanded into Mecklenburg County with an office in South Hill. With eleven locations in Southside Virginia, Citizens Bank and Trust Company is still committed to serve the communities with the same policy as when the doors opened in 1873. The Directors, Officers and Staff of Citizens Bank and Trust Company are dedicated to our customers and delivering great customer service.
