Paul and Janna Ryan previously tried to keep their marriage and family life out of the limelight by living in Paul's hometown of Janesville, Wisconsin. That changed with his being nominated as the Republican vice presidential candidate.

Paul and Janna met in 1999 at her 30th birthday party in Arlington, Virginia. Paul proposed marriage in April 2000 at his favorite fishing site, Big St. Germain Lake in northern Wisconsin.

Emily Anne Epstein: "A mutual friend introduced her [Janna] to Mr Ryan in 1999 and they dated for a year before tying the knot in Oklahoma City. She was 31 and he was 30. In their wedding announcement, the pair said that they shared a love for the outdoors, musing on hunting trips they took together."

Janna and Paul were married on December 2, 2000 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. They had approximate 400 guests. Paul and Janna honeymooned in the Virgin Islands. Paul: "I'm going to keep my first commitment to my wife, and that's to take her on a honeymoon."

Rep. Mark Green: “This is a close knit family, a deeply loving family. Paul and Janna are devoted to their kids and each other,” Green told POLITICO. “I am confident of the centrality of family to her life, and so as much as anything else, I’m sure that Janna will be being the mom and being with her kids and protecting her family as much as she can.”
