Gay congressman from New York to marry partner

Wedding bells will be ringing soon for Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney and his longtime partner, Randy Florke.

The New York Democrat told Gannett's Politics on the Hudson blog and other news outlets that he and Florke, who have been together for 21 years, will be heading down the aisle.

When they do, Maloney will become the second sitting member of Congress to legally wed his gay partner while in office. Then-Congressman Barney Frank, a Massachusetts Democrat who was one of the first openly gay lawmakers in Washington, married James Ready in summer of 2012.

"After 21 years together, we are excited for the next step in our journey as a family," Maloney and Florke said in their statement.

"For decades, we've fought to ensure that all the families can experience the joys of loving commitment and we are proud to have our friends and family share this special moment with us in the near future."

Maloney and Florke, who are raising three adopted children, got engaged on Christmas Day.

There are six openly gay or bisexual members currently serving in the U.S. House of Representatives.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., congratulated the couple via Twitter.
