The One Direction singer was left red faced when he arrived at a Heathrow check-in desk only to realise he had forgotten it.

And the blundering pop hunk's plan to spend a romantic new year with Taylor, 23, was temporarily grounded when airport staff told him he could not fly without the vital document.

Harry, 18, had been driven to Heathrow's Terminal 5 by his mum Anne Cox from their home in Holmes Chapel, Cheshire, where he had spent Christmas.

He was supposed to board Friday's 11.15am British Airways flight to Boston but had to change his plans because of the gaffe.

But he quickly made amends himself by arranging for a courier to pick up the passport from the Cheshire home and deliver it to the airport. But Harry's error left him with eight hours to kill around Terminal 5's clothes stores.

He finally got away on the next flight, which left at 7.30pm.

A source close to the singer told the Sunday People : "Harry was due to fly out on Friday morning and his mum very kindly offered to drive him to the airport, but when he got there he realised he didn't have his passport.

He wanted to fly out that day so rather than Anne drive the journey back up north, he decided to get a courier bike to pick it up and bring it to him. If she had driven to get it, Harry would have missed the next flight too.

He managed to get on the evening flight but it still meant that he had to wait another eight hours for his post-Christmas reunion with Taylor.

Despite this, he took the whole event in good humour and ridiculed himself for it.

He was embarrassed though, especially when he approached the check-in desk only to find he didn’t have the passport.

"Harry spent his time shopping and having some lunch before the next flight which took off that evening."

The 2010 X Factor finalist spent Christmas with his mum while Taylor celebrated the festive season with her parents in Nashville.

The couple will be seeing in 2013 in the Big Apple as country star Taylor is due to perform alongside Justin Bieber and a host of other stars at Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin'Eve in New York's Times Square.

The source added: "There was no way Harry and Taylor could spend Christmas Day together but they're making up for it by seeing in the New Year together."

Harry and Taylor – who have been dubbed Haylor – have been dating for a month and, despite living on separate continents, have been virtually inseparable since.

They first met in the US in April when Harry was touring with One Direction and went on two dates.

The romance quickly fizzled out and Harry was then seen kissing model Emma Ostilly, 18, in New Zealand.

But four weeks ago, the couple were seen holding hands in New York’s Central Park shortly before One Direction's sell-out gig at Madison Square Garden.
