Geriatric Research, Education and Clinical Center (GRECC) - The Geriatric Research Education Clinical Center at Edith Nourse Rogers Memorial Veterans Hospital, Bedford, Massachusetts, has been at the forefront of geriatric research and clinical care since its inception in 1975.  The Bedford GRECC, a division of the New England GRECC, is currently one of 20 GRECCs at VA Medical Centers throughout the United States. Each GRECC provides a highly integrated, three-component system of research, education and clinical care to the geriatric veteran population.

Today, the GRECC at the Bedford VA Hospital maintains a comprehensive clinical Alzheimer’s Disease Program, including a 100-bed inpatient Dementia Special Care Unit, the Memory Diagnostic Clinic, and the Dementia Management Clinic.  Research at the GRECC includes a vigorous basic science and clinical research program as well as the Center for Translational Cognitive Neuroscience.  The GRECC educational training program is the one of largest multidisciplinary/allied health training programs in the Boston area, comprising geriatric medicine, neurology, psychology, dental, social work, pharmacy, nursing and optometry trainees. Clinical staff of the Dementia Study Unit have joined the GRECC core staff to present state of the art approaches to care of the person with dementia at numerous local, regional and national conferences.  Current projects include the construction of a special wing on one of the dementia special care units for women veterans with advanced dementia.  The GRECC at Bedford VA Hospital continues to advance research, education and clinical care to improve the lives of older veterans and their families.

Special Programs:
Mental Health Intensive Case Management Program (MHICM) -  serves veterans with serious mental illnesses.  The program fosters self-sufficiency and independent living in the community.

Compensated Work Therapy (CWT) - Bedford VA has one of the largest CWT programs within VA.  The program addresses the vocational needs of veterans through assessment, counseling and on-the-job training, while helping veterans plan for rehabilitation and recovery.

Peer Services - The Edith Nourse Rogers Memorial Veterans Hospital has emerged as a national leader in the development of peer services and peer provider education.  Peer Support is a system of giving and receiving help founded on key principles of respect, shared responsibility, and mutual agreement of what is helpful. Provided for Veterans by Veterans and people in recovery, Bedford Peer Services include many innovative group, individual and outreach applications. The New England MIRECC Peer Education Center situated at Bedford, coordinates peer certification and continuing education trainings designed to insure that peer services are safely and successfully implemented within the VA.
