OHSU's Department of Ophthalmology was founded in 1945 under the leadership of Dr. Kenneth C. Swan. In the late 1980's Research to Prevent Blindness sponsored a capital campaign for their seventh and last regional eye research institute, to be built around the team of very successful researchers and clinicians at OHSU. In 1991, under the leadership of Dr. Fritz Fraunfelder, the Department moved into a 100,000 square foot free standing facility named after James and George Casey, founders of United Parcel Service.
As part of Oregon Health & Science University, the Casey Eye Institute is an academic regional eye center – a place where the learning and innovation never stops. The first OHSU department to organize as an institute, it is named after James and George Casey, founders of United Parcel Service. The Casey Eye Institute is also one of only seven regional eye research centers in the nation sponsored byResearch to Prevent Blindness, the world's leading voluntary organization in support of eye research.
The Casey Eye Institute has operated the Elks Children’S Eye Clinic since 1949, thanks to the generous support of the Oregon State Elks Association. Together, we’e helped countless children enjoy improved and restored vision.
