Fourteen out of 16 patients with advanced leukemia are now in remission after scientists found a way to genetically modify their immune systems to fight cancer.

Researchers at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center modified the immune cells of these patients to give them the ability to both recognize and kill cancer cells. All of the patients involved had relapsed or were no longer responsive to chemotherapy prior to the study.
