Thomas A. Buchanan, MD is professor of medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, and physiology and biophysics, associate dean for clinical research, and chief of the Division of Endocrinology and Diabetes at the Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California (USC) in Los Angeles. He is also attending physician at the Los Angeles County + USC Medical Center.

Dr Buchanan is clinically trained and board certified in endocrinology and metabolism. He conducts research on the etiology, pathogenesis, and prevention of type 2 diabetes. He has held national offices as chair of the Council on Diabetes and Pregnancy and member of Board of Directors for the American Diabetes Association, and president of the National Association of General Clinical Research Center Program Directors. Dr Buchanan and his colleagues have conducted longitudinal studies of high-risk individuals to define patterns of change in insulin resistance and insulin secretion that lead to type 2 diabetes. Based on their findings, they conducted 2 successful clinical trials of diabetes prevention and pancreatic ß-cell preservation in high-risk women and the biological information gained from those studies points to a specific pancreatic ß cell defect that is heritable. The group is conducting a large family-based study designed to identify the genetic basis for the ß-cell defect. Dr Buchanan was the recipient of the Norbert Freinkel Award (1999) and a Distinguished Clinical Science Award (2004) from the American Diabetes Association. He is also a member of the Association of American Physicians.

Dr Buchanan has served on the editorial boards of the American Journal of Physiology: Endocrinology and Metabolism and the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism. He is an ad hoc reviewer for many other medical journals, including Diabetes, Diabetes Care, Journal of the American Medical Association, the New England Journal of Medicine, and Metabolism. He has published and lectured extensively on issues relating to diabetes and associated disorders.
