History
More than 95 years of excellence, and counting.
United’s roots go back to 1916, when H.D. Snell opened his first United Cash Store in Sayre, Oklahoma. Today, his legacy has grown to include 51 stores in 30 Texas cities, with more than 10,000 team members committed to serving our Guests and their communities.

From the beginning, H.D.’s focus was on treating each Guest as he would want to be treated. Since then, his philosophy of providing outstanding Guest service, value, high- quality products, and involvement in the communities we serve has never waivered.

A Texas tradition since 1949
In 1949, H.D. “Jack” Snell, Jr., purchased the Vernon and Wellington grocery stores from his father and the Texas tradition began to grow. An innovative visionary, Jack introduced United to Lubbock in the 1950s, Wichita Falls in the 1960s and Amarillo in the 1970s. Today, United Supermarkets is still led by the Snell family, now in its fourth generation of management. Jack’s son, Robert Snell, serves as chairman of the board, while great-grandsons Gantt and Matt Bumstead are co-presidents of the company.

Giving back and receiving
One of the greatest privileges we enjoy is giving back to the communities we serve. In 2003, we were proud to be named the inaugural winner of the Supermarket News “Community Service Award” for our innovative UCrew community volunteer teams.

In 2001, we were named winner of the Better Business Bureau’s “National Torch Award for Marketplace Ethics,” joining previous winners IBM, Sony Corporation, and Dollar General Stores in being recognized for ethical treatment of Guests, employees and communities. The company has been on the Dallas Morning News’ “Top 100 Places to Work in DFW” list, and on Texas Monthly’s “Best Companies to Work for in Texas” list three times. Most recently, United Supermarkets was named the 2009 “Family Business of the Year” by the Institute for Family Business at Baylor University, and was named the 2010 “Deli Operator of the Year” by InStore Buyer Magazine.

In addition, our stores are consistently voted “Best Supermarket” in balloting by local shoppers in virtually every one of our communities.

TAKEAWAY™ MEDICATION DISPOSAL
Medication disposal practices commonly used today can compromise the integrity of water supplies, while unused and expired drugs pile up in home medicine cabinets, increasing the likelihood for teenagers, elderly, pets, or others to misuse or abuse them.

The TakeAway™ Environmental Return System allows you to safely dispose of your unwanted medications. Pick up a TakeAway™ postage-paid envelope at our pharmacy, and mail your unwanted prescription through the U.S. Postal Service to a licensed, secure facility for safe destruction. Controlled substances are excluded from this program by law.

COMPOUNDING
Our compounding pharmacy based in Amarillo can prepare custom medication for you. When unique circumstances occur, we can formulate customized prescriptions to change the strength of a medication or alter its dosing form to make it easier to take. We can work with your doctor to provide an equivalent version of your medication for discontinued or unavailable medications, create gluten-free or sugar-free compounds, alter medication to make it more ingestible for children and produce bioidentical hormones. Your compounded medication can be shipped directly to you or yourUnited Supermarkets pharmacy and, as always, our pharmacists are available to counsel you.

FREE TO FEEL BETTER
As a complimentary service to our Guests, United Supermarkets pharmacies will fill prescriptions for prenatal vitamins and antibiotics FREE of charge. The program provides up to a 14-day supply, for 60 of the most commonly prescribed generic antibiotics when you present a valid prescription. Best of all, there is no limit to the number of 14-day covered prescriptions you can have filled for free.

To help expectant mothers and newborns get off to a strong start, we also provide a year’s worth of three of Prenatal vitamins free of charge with a valid prescription.
