Hartig Drug is corporately located in Dubuque, IA where the first store was started by AJ Hartig more than 100 years ago. Throughout our 100-plus year history, Hartig Drug has played a key role in progressive retail practices including; opening the first Self-Service drug store in Iowa, being one of the first pharmacies to have a woman pharmacist and also being one of the first stores to hire women managers. In 1904, at the age of 22, A.J. Hartig opened his first drugstore in his native Dubuque on the corner of 1st and Locust streets. Hartig Drug continued growing through the early twentieth century by expanding the product line and winning over the Dubuque community.
