Maui officials say a man fishing in a kayak has died after a shark attack.

Maui County Ocean Safety officials received a report Monday that a shark bit a man fishing between Maui and Molokini, a small island 3 miles off Maui's southwest coast. The county says a fellow kayaker took the victim to a nearby snorkeling charter boat.

The man died before the boat reached Maui. His identity has not been released, and the type of shark is unknown.

Though it happened far offshore, officials are closing southwest Maui beaches a mile north and a mile south of the attack until noon Tuesday.

This is Maui's eighth shark attack this year. A German tourist who lost her arm to a shark died in August, a week after she was bitten while snorkeling.
