President Obama and his family made burritos for the homeless Monday as part of their participation in a service project to commemorate Martin Luther King Day.
 
Mr. Obama, first lady Michelle Obama and daughters Malia and Sasha joined a serving line at D.C. Central Kitchen, where they prepared meals for distribution to local shelters. It was the kitchen’s 25th anniversary.
 
“I just want to thank everybody here for the great work they do,” Mr. Obama said.
 
The president wasn’t sure what kind of meat he was putting in the burritos, telling reporters it was either beef or lamb before settling on beef.
 
At one point, the president shouted down the line that they were running out of burritos. He joked that he was “very proud” of Sasha’s technique. Senior presidential adviser Valerie Jarrett also took part.
 
The Obamas worked alongside veterans who have continued to serve in their communities through programs and organizations such as DC Central Kitchen, AmeriCorps, The Mission Continues, Team Rubicon, Teach for America, and Team RWB, the White House said.
 
Members of Mr. Obama’s Cabinet also participated in service projects on Monday, including Treasury Secretary Jack Lew, who sorted and packed clothing for homeless veterans at the VA Medical Center in Washington; Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker, who served food at a local organization called Food and Friends that prepares and delivers meals and groceries to people living with HIV/AIDS, cancer and other illnesses; and Education Secretary Arne Duncan, who joined CityYearcorp members and volunteers at a project at Coolidge High School.
