Former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher opposed a military strike against Lebanon that was proposed by Ronald Reagan after the 1983 bombing of a U.S. Marine barracks, newly released records show.

Thatcher told Reagan she was “frankly apprehensive about the retaliatory action you propose,” according to declassified documents released by Downing Street and published by the Guardian newspaper.

The files were released under the 30-year rule which governs access to government records.
