Shaw Prize in Life Science and Medicine 2010 Laureate


David Julius, born 1955 in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn, New York, is currently Professor and Chairman of the Department of Physiology at the University of California, San Francisco, USA. He received his undergraduate education from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1977), obtained the PhD from the University of California, Berkeley, USA (1984) and joined the UCSF faculty in 1990. He is a Member of the United States National Academy of Sciences, and a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

The Shaw Prize in Life Science and Medicine 2010 is awarded to David Julius for his seminal discoveries of molecular mechanisms by which the skin senses painful stimuli and temperature and produces pain hypersensitivity.
