The University of Texas at Austin Academics
The site that is now the University of Texas (UT) was obtained by the Congress of the Republic of Texas in 1839 but it was not until 1883 that the university opened its gates. It was among the eight institutions to form the first Ivy League.
The university is accredited by the Commission of Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award bachelor, master, and doctoral degrees. UT Austin is home to 51,000 students and awards 12,000 degrees annually.
UT Austin offers more than 170 undergraduate programs through its 17 schools. Major colleges and schools include:

As a research oriented institution, UT Austin boasts of faculty that is a rich combination of academic strength and experience such as Nobel Prize Winner Steven Weinberg and Pulitzer Prize winner David Oshinky. It offers world renowned educational facilities in the form of an Advanced Computing Center and the Norman Hackerman Building, a state of the art science facility.

UT Austin accepts applications for both spring and fall programs. Admission requirements vary for undergraduate and graduate programs.
Freshmen Applications
Students must submit all official high school transcripts and SAT (with reasoning) or ACT (with writing) test scores with the application form. Home schooled students must submit SAT subject test scores. Letters of recommendation may also be attached but are not required. Some schools, including the school of engineering, may have additional course requirements, which can be checked at the school’s webpage.
Minimum high school coursework requirements must also be met. International students must submit a residency affidavit.
Graduate Applications
Graduate programs include ad hoc programs, portfolio programs, and dual degree programs. Admission requirements include:
• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university.
• A minimum GPA of 3.0.
• Test scores of GRE/GMAT.
• Letters of recommendation.
• Meet admission requirements of the school being applied to.
UT Austin accepts transfer students from accredited colleges and universities in the United States. Freshmen, transfer and graduate students may have to fulfill additional requirements depending on the course they choose. Fulfilling this criteria will aid the application process.
Financial Aid
In order to be eligible for financial aid, all students must complete the financial aid application known as the FAFSA. Students may have to complete some prerequisites for receiving financial aid after their FAFSA application form has been received by the university. Funds are provided before classes commence so students can pay tuition fee and make housing payments.
Financial aid is available in the form of grants, scholarships, work study programs, emergency loans, fellowships, and teaching assistantships.
Available fellowships include the recruitment fellowships, college and departmental fellowships, diversity fellowships, and the Dean’s Prestigious Fellowship Supplement. Students are also encouraged to apply for outside fellowships funded by civic bodies. Most fellowships cover the entire cost of the tuition fee and provide $1000 – $2000 a month for miscellaneous expenditures.

On-Campus Housing
Residence facilities at the university include 14 residence halls. All rooms have internet access but a subscription is required to use it. UT has separate residential apartments for members of the Honors Society, which houses students enrolled in undergraduate honors programs.
Married students can reside in facilities at the University Apartments.
Dining on Campus
There are four major dining areas at the campus which provide buffet and a la carte meal plans. Students can also enjoy Starbucks Coffee and Krispy Kreme Doughnuts at the Kinsolving residence hall. Other eateries include Taco Bell, Wendy’s, and Chick-fil-a.
Student Health Services
UT Austin also provides University Health Services where students can get medical advice 24/7 by calling the helpline number or even schedule doctor appointments by enrolling in the student health insurance plan.
A large part of the student community can always be found at the Underground, which includes a bar, a café and options for bowling, billiards, and air hockey.
Athletics
Known as the Texas Longhorns, athletic teams of the UT Austin have won more than forty national championships and 88 medals in student Olympics.
