BREARLEY JUNIOR ADVANCES TO FINALS OF THE NYC SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING FAIR
Congratulations to Sara Sakowitz (XI), on advancing to the finals round of the 2013 New York City Science and Engineering Fair. Sara presented her project on a "Novel Method to Diagnose Non Small Cell Lung Cancer Using a microRNA Signature in the Peripheral Blood" at the American Museum of Natural History on March 19. "Sara presented the intriguing results of her independent project to members of our science research seminar," says Dr. Laurie Seminara, Head of the Brearley Science Department, "and we are very happy that she had the opportunity now to share her work with a broad group of students and teachers at the NYC Science and Engineering Fair."

BREARLEY STUDENTS ATTEND PREVIEW OF "MAKERS: WOMEN WHO MAKE AMERICA"
By Isabella Falla, XI, and Natasha Khimji, XI

Members of the Global Girls CIO, a student-run Common Interest Organization at Brearley, attended the preview event and discussion of the new documentaryMakers: Women Who Make America, which highlights the last fifty years of the women’s liberation movement, at an Interschool Seminar held at the Spence School in February. The film, narrated by Meryl Streep, can now be viewed in full at http://mashable.com/2013/02/27/makers-documentary-pbs-watch-online/. The preview clip of the movie featured notable figures of the women’s movement (even if they did not realize it at the time) such as Kathrin Switzer, the first woman to run the Boston marathon and Billie Jean King and her famous “Battle of the Sexes” tennis match, among many others. The clip also traced the development of the women’s movement from the negative attitudes toward women in the media in the 1950s to changing attitudes about women and their valuable role in the workplace in the 1960s and 70s after the movement gained ground. We found that the movement was not truly about gaining independence for women, but instead it advocated that both genders had to be equally involved and equally committed to the same goal in order for any change to take place.
