SAT Score - Essay Scoring

The exam-taker will receive a score on a scale of 2 - 12 for the essay section of the SAT. This section of the exam is scored by two trained readers who evaluate each essay based on how clear the essay is, how well-developed each idea within the essay is, and whether or not the essay is structured in a logical manner. Each reader will assign his or her own score to the essay on a scale of 1 - 6. A third reader will be asked to read the essay if there is a difference of more than one point between each reader's score. If a third reader is required, the third reader will determine the final combined score for the essay. However, the final combined SAT score for the essay portion of the exam is usually determined simply by adding the scores assigned by each reader together.

An essay will receive a score of 1 if it is extremely difficult to follow or if it fails to establish a specific point of view on the issue, a 2 if it is difficult to follow or if the individual's point of view is not well-established, and a 3 if it contains a number of errors or if the individual's point of view is established but not defended well. An essay will receive a 4, even if the essay contains some grammatical errors and/or misused words, as long as the individual's point of view is established and defended well; a 5, even if the essay contains some grammatical errors, as long as the individual's point of view is established well and very well defender; and a 6 if the essay is extremely easy to understand and is logically structured, if the exam-taker's point of view is established and defended extremely well, and if it is a well-developed essay all around.

It is possible for an individual to receive a score of 0 for the essay section of the exam. However, a score of 0 will only be issued if the essay is written using a pen or any other writing instrument other than a number 2 pencil, if the lines for the essay section are left blank, if the essay is completely illegible, or if the essay is completely unrelated to the issue presented in the essay question.
